Degli Antonii, a Bolognese musician working in the chapel of San Petronio, has traditionally been considered as an example of the earliest literature for solo cello. The discovery of a manuscript copy of the work, which includes a further part for the violin, supports the conjecture that the «Ricercate» were originally intended for violin and bass.
